Chidambaram Critiques PM Modi's Claim on Tamil Nadu Funding Increases
Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement about the Centre's funding for Tamil Nadu. Modi claimed that the funds allocated for Tamil Nadu's development were three times higher than before 2014. Chidambaram argued that even a first-year economics student would understand that economic metrics naturally increase over time.

Funding Comparisons and Economic Metrics
Chidambaram highlighted that Modi and central ministers often mention increased funding for Tamil Nadu from 2014 to 2024 compared to 2004 to 2014. He pointed out that Modi claimed his government provided seven times more money for railway projects in Tamil Nadu than before. "Ask a first-year student of economics. She will tell you that the economic metric will always be higher than in the previous years," Chidambaram stated on X.
The former Union finance minister explained that the GDP size, central budget, and government expenditure grow annually. He questioned whether these numbers are higher in terms of GDP proportion or total expenditure proportion. "You are one year older than in the previous year," he added, emphasising that while numbers may increase, their significance should be evaluated in context.
Prime Minister's Remarks on Tamil Nadu's Development
During his visit to Tamil Nadu, Modi addressed concerns raised by the ruling DMK about fund allocations. He asserted that the central government had allocated three times more money for Tamil Nadu's development over the past decade compared to the period before 2014. Modi noted that this increased funding significantly contributed to the state's economic and industrial growth.
Despite these claims, some individuals continue to express dissatisfaction with fund distribution, according to Modi. He referred to beneficiaries from Tamil Nadu who have received support through various initiatives but still voice concerns over funding levels.
Chidambaram's remarks underscore a broader debate about how economic metrics should be interpreted and presented. While absolute numbers may show growth, understanding their relative impact is crucial for assessing true progress.
