The Congress party criticised the BJP-led central government on Monday for the soaring prices of food items, labelling it an economic crisis that will burden household finances. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted that the escalating costs of essential food commodities such as tomatoes, onions, and potatoes pose a significant threat to the health and nutrition of impoverished communities.

Ramesh pointed out that these staple items are now at the forefront of a broader increase in vegetable and food prices. He noted that food inflation has averaged 6.3% over the past four years and seems to be worsening. A report by Crisil indicated that the cost of a vegetarian meal was 11% higher in September 2024 compared to the previous year.
Impact on Household Budgets
According to Ramesh, this situation represents an economic tragedy due to its impact on household incomes. He also described it as a social tragedy because it disproportionately affects women's diets. Furthermore, he warned of a developmental tragedy due to the long-term health consequences of poor nutrition. "A TOP-class disaster for India," he remarked.
He cited media reports indicating that wholesale food prices surged at a two-year-high rate of 9.5% in September, with vegetables becoming nearly 49% more expensive, marking the sharpest increase in 14 months. Reports suggested potato and onion prices rose by 78.1% and 78.8%, respectively, in September.
Rising Inflation Concerns
Official data released on Monday showed retail inflation climbed to 5.49% in September from 3.65% in August, primarily driven by higher food prices. The consumer price index-based inflation was recorded at 5.02% in September 2023. The National Statistics Office reported that inflation within the food basket increased to 9.24% in September from 5.66% in August and 6.62% in September 2023.
Ramesh expressed concern over these developments, emphasising their potential long-term impact on public health and nutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations. The Congress party continues to hold the government accountable for addressing these pressing economic challenges.
