EET Fuels, formerly Essar Oil UK, unveils its bold vision to become the UKs first low-carbon refinery. With a USD 1.2 billion investment, they aim to slash carbon emissions by 95% by 2030, revolutionizing fuel production and supporting the UKs energy transition.
In a significant move towards decarbonization, Essar Oil UK has unveiled its new identity as EET Fuels, signaling its commitment to becoming the United Kingdom's first low-carbon refinery. With a rich history spanning a century, the Stanlow refinery, situated on the River Mersey, has been a cornerstone of the nation's energy landscape, providing essential fuel and chemical building blocks for everyday life. EET Fuels remains steadfast in its dedication to sustainably meeting the energy needs of the country while embracing the transition to a low-carbon future.

Pioneering Decarbonization Strategies
EET Fuels is spearheading a transformative journey to significantly reduce all emissions associated with its production processes, aligning with the UK's ambitious energy transition goals. Through strategic investments totaling USD 1.2 billion, the company aims to achieve a remarkable 95 percent cut in carbon emissions by 2030. This translates to an impressive reduction of two million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, representing a substantial 12.5 percent of the North West's total carbon emissions. EET Fuels' decarbonization strategy hinges on two state-of-the-art approaches.
Industrial Carbon Capture (ICC)
EET Fuels is pioneering the implementation of industrial carbon capture (ICC), a cutting-edge technology that will significantly reduce refinery emissions. Scheduled to be operational by 2028, this innovative approach is projected to result in an annual reduction of 1 million tonnes of CO2. By capturing and storing carbon emissions, EET Fuels is making significant strides in decarbonizing its operations.
Hydrogen Fuel
EET Fuels is transitioning from traditional refinery fuel sources to hydrogen, a cleaner and more sustainable alternative. This shift is expected to yield an additional annual reduction of 1 million tonnes of CO2. By embracing hydrogen fuel, EET Fuels is demonstrating its commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies that minimize environmental impact.
Driving the UK's Energy Transition
EET Fuels' CEO, Deepak Maheshwari, expressed his enthusiasm for the company's progress, stating, "We are delivering on our plan to be the world's first low-carbon process refinery and world's first low-carbon process fuel producer. It is world-leading, and we're pleased that it is happening now, in the North West." As part of Essar Energy Transition (EET), EET Fuels is contributing to the creation of the UK's leading energy transition hub in North West England. EET's comprehensive investment plan of USD 3.6 billion over the next five years will drive the development of a diverse range of low-carbon energy transition projects. Of this substantial investment, USD 2.4 billion will be dedicated to the Stanlow site, strategically located between Liverpool and Manchester.
Leading by Example
Prashant Ruia, Chair of EET Fuels and CEO of Essar Energy Transition, emphasized the significance of EET Fuels within the broader EET initiative. He stated, "EET Fuels is a key part of EET, which is building Europe's foremost integrated energy transition hub. Leading by example, Essar Energy Transition is a major catalyst for region-wide industrial decarbonisation. We are playing our part to ensure that the UK delivers on its climate change goals, enhances energy security, and maintains a strong, secure manufacturing base for fuels." EET's investment program is poised to play a pivotal role in accelerating the UK's low-carbon transformation, aligning with government policies and generating highly skilled employment opportunities within the Northern Powerhouse economy.
Additional EET Initiatives
In addition to EET Fuels, EET encompasses other significant projects that contribute to the UK's energy transition. EET Hydrogen is actively developing 1.35 GW of blue hydrogen for the UK market, with plans to expand capacity to 4 GW. Furthermore, Stanlow Terminals Ltd is developing essential storage and pipeline infrastructure, including the UK's largest Biofuel Storage hub. These initiatives collectively demonstrate EET's comprehensive approach to driving sustainable change across the energy sector.
EET Fuels' transformation into a low-carbon refinery marks a pivotal moment in the UK's journey towards decarbonization. Through its strategic investments and innovative technologies, EET Fuels is setting a precedent for sustainable energy production, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future.
