Eid-e-Milad Holiday Rescheduled In Mumbai To September 18; Here's Why! What All Is Closed?

The Maharashtra government has rescheduled the Eid-e-Milad holiday in the Mumbai district from September 16 to September 18. This decision comes after a request from the local Muslim community to avoid a potential clash with Anant Chaturdashi, the concluding day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which falls on September 17.

The state's official announcement of the date change was driven by the desire to manage the large crowds that traditionally gather for the Ganesh idol immersion, known as Ganpati Visarjan, which takes place on Anant Chaturdashi. Mumbai, often referred to as the "City of Dreams," comes alive during Ganesh Chaturthi, as the streets fill with devotees paying their respects to the beloved deity. The immersion processions can cause traffic disruptions and logistical challenges across the city. Recognizing this, the local Muslim community stepped forward with a proposal to shift their Eid-e-Milad processions to September 18 to accommodate the Ganpati Visarjan.

The Khilafat House in Byculla, representing the Muslim community, played a key role in this collaborative effort. Their proposal was accepted by state authorities. Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan also supported the move, writing to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and requesting the formal declaration of September 18 as the new public holiday for Eid-e-Milad. "Anant Chaturdashi falls on September 17, and members of the Muslim community have decided to take out Eid-e-Milad processions on September 18 so that both festivals can be celebrated with pomp and gaiety," Khan explained in his letter to the Chief Minister.

This marks the second consecutive year in which the Muslim community in Mumbai has voluntarily rescheduled their Eid-e-Milad processions. Eid-e-Milad, which commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is typically observed on September 16, depending on the sighting of the moon. However, this year, as in the past, the community has prioritized ensuring that the Ganpati immersion, is one of the city's most significant events.

"Just like last year, the Muslim community has once again demonstrated unity and coexistence by adjusting their religious activities to ensure the Ganpati immersion process proceeds without any hindrance," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1), Pankaj Dahane.

District collectors in other regions of Maharashtra have also been granted the discretion to adjust the Eid-e-Milad holiday based on local conditions and logistical considerations.

Authorities, too, are stepping up their efforts to ensure that the city runs smoothly during this busy period. In a related move to manage the influx of crowds during the Ganpati Visarjan, the Central Railway (CR) authorities have announced the operation of 22 additional suburban train services from September 14 to 18. Of these, 20 trains will run on the main line, while two will operate on the harbour line, ensuring smoother travel for the thousands of devotees expected to participate in the festival.

Navi Mumbai is also partaking in this collaborative spirit. The Eid-e-Milad procession there, traditionally commencing from Turbhe and weaving through Vashi and Koparkhairane before concluding at the Ghansoli Dargah, has likewise been rescheduled for September 18. This synchronized adjustment in both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai ensures that both festivals are celebrated without overlapping, thereby reducing strain on local resources.
