Electronics Sector Positioned to Become the Largest Manufacturing Industry Globally, Says MeitY Secretary

The electronics sector is on track to become the world's largest manufacturing industry, both globally and in India, according to S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). He highlighted Tamil Nadu's electronics manufacturing cluster as a leading player in this global shift. Krishnan shared these insights during the opening of Zetwerk Electronics' new manufacturing facility, attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Electronics Sector Set to Lead Global Manufacturing

Krishnan emphasised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a challenging goal of achieving USD 500 billion in annual electronics production. He noted that Tamil Nadu's involvement is crucial to meeting this target, with nearly 20% expected to come from this region. The state's high-quality workforce is a key factor attracting manufacturers eager to expand and export globally.

Tamil Nadu's Role in Electronics Manufacturing

During the event, Krishnan praised Tamil Nadu for its significant contribution to electronics manufacturing. He mentioned that Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts have the potential to become India's largest electronics manufacturing hub. The state is home to many beneficiaries of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, with seven out of 27 companies under the IT hardware PLI scheme located here.

Krishnan also highlighted Zetwerk Electronics' new facility as a significant addition to Tamil Nadu's achievements. This factory is the company's seventh in India and is expected to play a vital role in reaching the national electronics manufacturing goal. The state's skilled workforce continues to be a major draw for industries looking to establish a presence in the region.

Inauguration Event Highlights

The inauguration event took place in Sriperumbudur and was attended by notable figures such as Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, Zetwerk CEO Amrit Acharya, and President of Electronics Business Josh Foulger. Krishnan expressed his satisfaction at being part of the event, noting that Tamil Nadu's participation is essential for achieving national manufacturing targets.

Following the inauguration, Union Minister Vaishnaw visited the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) campus in Thaiyur. There, he explored the Hyperloop test facility and engaged with faculty and students to understand their work better. This visit underscores the government's interest in fostering innovation and collaboration within educational institutions.

Tamil Nadu's strategic position in electronics manufacturing is further solidified by its robust infrastructure and skilled workforce. The state's commitment to supporting manufacturers aligns with national goals, making it an attractive destination for investment and growth in this sector.
