The Tesla and SpaceX Owner Elon Musk announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok is now the most popular free available app in the United States (US) on the Google Play Store. It is at the number 1 position followed by ChatGPT and TikTok.
Musk posted a screenshot on X (Twitter) that showed Grok's dominance over TikTok and ChatGPT in the "Top Free" category. He captioned the post, "Cool, @Grok is #1 on Android!" In the shared screenshot, Grok is at the topmost rank with a 4.9 stars rating, while OpenAI's ChatGPT and Chinese app TikTok have ratings of 4.8 and 4.1 stars, respectively.

Tech billionaire's post highlights Grok's growing reach on Android while receiving divergent feedback on X, with some users applauding its search features and others criticising its noise and ethical concerns.
About Grok:
Elon Musk's company, xAI, launched the conversational generative (gen) AI chatbot Grok in 2023. It provides the most up-to-date information via microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Like ChatGPT and other AI tools, Grok can create text and have chats with people. It is designed to give clever, "rebellious" solutions to queries that are creative and provocative. It is said to respond to "spicy" queries that the majority of conventional AI systems cannot do. It is accessible with a Premium+ X subscription.
Reportedly, Billionaire entrepreneur Musk claims that xAI is developed to directly compete with OpenAI. Grok chatbot not only acts as ChatGPT's "anti-woke" equivalent but also presents new prospects in the broader field of generative AI.
Recently, xAI unveiled Grok-3, which it says performs far better than OpenAI's GPT-4o. The Android version of Grok was launched in February 2025.
Elon Musk Sells X in All-stock Deal
Elon Musk revealed on Friday that he had sold social networking platform X to his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, for $33 billion in all stock. He took to X and said, "The combination values xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion ($45B less $12B debt)."
On Saturday, he announced that X is officially sold to xAI. Musk posted, "xAI and X's futures are intertwined. Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent. This combination will unlock immense potential by blending xAI's advanced AI capability and expertise with X's massive reach. The combined company will deliver smarter, more meaningful experiences to billions of people while staying true to our core mission of seeking truth and advancing knowledge. This will allow us to build a platform that doesn't just reflect the world but actively accelerates human progress."
"X is the digital town square where more than 600M active users go to find the real-time source of ground truth and, in the last two years, has been transformed into one of the most efficient companies in the world, positioning it to deliver scalable future growth," Musk said.
Any Changes in X After Sold To xAI?
Although xAI developed its artificial intelligence models using data from X user postings, and its AI chatbot Grok is available to X subscribers, it is yet unclear whether the move will have any effect on X's unpaid users.
