Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla emphasised the need for alternative income sources for farmers due to changing climatic conditions. Speaking at the 76th Foundation Day of the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), he highlighted the importance of establishing a potato-based industry in the state.

Potato Industry and Crop Diversification
Shukla stressed that diversifying crops could ensure food and nutrition security for India's growing population. He noted that potatoes are a major vegetable crop, contributing about 28% of India's total vegetable production. India is the second-largest potato producer globally, accounting for around 15% of global production, following China.
The governor pointed out that potatoes are cultivated on approximately 14,000 hectares in Himachal Pradesh, yielding about two lakh tonnes annually. Although this production is below the national average, the high quality of Himachal's potatoes ensures good income for farmers.
Research and Development Achievements
Shukla congratulated CPRI for developing blight-resistant potato varieties such as Kufri Himalini, Kufri Girdhari, and Kufri Karan. He acknowledged that due to the institute's research and modern techniques, India has become a major potato producer worldwide. Over the past seven decades, there has been significant progress in potato area and production.
The governor also praised CPRI for developing over 70 potato varieties and aeroponic methods for producing virus-free seed potatoes. He appreciated their efforts in conserving species' physical wealth and securing more than 25 patents.
Concerns and Future Directions
Despite these achievements, Shukla expressed concern over the declining interest of farmers in potato cultivation in recent years. He urged scientists to investigate the reasons behind this trend through research to address various issues related to it.
In conclusion, Shukla's address underscored the importance of crop diversification and technological advancements in sustaining agriculture amid changing climatic conditions. His call for research into farmers' declining interest in potatoes highlights the need for continuous innovation and support in the agricultural sector.
