Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Addresses Farmers' Distress and Calls for Introspection on Agricultural Institutions

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar recently highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by farmers, despite the presence of esteemed institutions like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He expressed concern over the distress among farmers, who are increasingly resorting to protests. This situation, he noted, is detrimental to the nation's overall well-being and calls for serious reflection.

Dhankhar made these remarks during the centenary celebrations of the Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT) in Mumbai. CIRCOT is a key institute under ICAR, part of the Union Ministry of Agriculture's Department of Agricultural Research and Education. The Vice-President questioned why, despite such institutions being widespread across India, farmers continue to face hardships.

Economic Growth and Rural Income

He also mentioned India's potential to become the world's third-largest economy from its current fifth position. However, achieving developed nation status requires a significant increase in citizens' incomes, particularly from rural areas. Dhankhar stressed that dialogue is essential for resolving issues, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message to the world.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan echoed Dhankhar's sentiments, stating that India's prosperity hinges on its farmers. He emphasised that agriculture remains the backbone of India's economy and that farmers are integral to its success. Chouhan noted that a prosperous India cannot exist without its cultivators.

Advancements in Cotton Processing

Chouhan highlighted CIRCOT's unique role in processing mechanically picked cotton. He announced plans for a pilot plant facility in Mumbai to adapt machinery for this purpose. The goal is to transform CIRCOT into an international centre for cotton genome research. Developing a traceability system for cotton exports is also crucial, he added.

The minister pointed out the high cost of cotton seeds sold by private companies. He urged ICAR to ensure farmers receive quality seeds at affordable prices. This would help farmers benefit more from cotton farming and improve their livelihoods.

Future Roadmap for CIRCOT

Chouhan called for a comprehensive roadmap for CIRCOT leading up to 2047. He insisted on rapid progress in areas like cotton production, processing, and plaiting to ensure CIRCOT's prominence by then. The minister emphasised the need for swift action to achieve these goals.

The Vice-President urged agricultural research institutes to encourage farmers to add value to their products. This approach could significantly boost their income and contribute to India's economic growth. Both Dhankhar and Chouhan stressed the importance of supporting farmers as they are vital to India's future prosperity.
