Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently evaluated the capital expenditure plans of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. She highlighted the necessity for prompt and effective use of these funds. A significant part of the discussion was centred on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban scheme, which is vital for providing affordable housing solutions.

The finance ministry shared on X that Sitharaman stressed the urgency of advancing this scheme to address urban India's housing demands. This meeting was one of several ongoing reviews with ministries and departments that have substantial capital expenditure allocations in the Union Budget. For the fiscal year 2024-25, Rs 28,628 crore has been allocated for capital expenditure.
Capital Expenditure Focus
During the meeting, Sitharaman reiterated the importance of using these funds efficiently and within the set timelines. She urged officials from the Urban Affairs Ministry to ensure that the capital expenditure target for FY 2024-25 is achieved within the specified period. The goal is to fully utilise the entire budgeted amount by the end of the financial year.
Urban transport was another area of emphasis during the discussions. Sitharaman encouraged officials to meet capital expenditure targets specifically allocated for Metro Rail and the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). These projects are crucial for enhancing urban mobility and infrastructure development.
The Finance Minister's review forms part of a broader strategy to ensure that ministries with significant capital expenditure allocations are on track. This approach aims to maximise the impact of government spending on infrastructure and public services, thereby supporting economic growth and development across various sectors.
The meeting underscored a commitment to ensuring that allocated funds are not only spent but also spent wisely and effectively. By focusing on timely execution and efficient fund utilisation, the government aims to meet its infrastructure goals while addressing pressing urban challenges.
Sitharaman's emphasis on both housing and transport highlights a balanced approach to urban development. By addressing these key areas, the government seeks to improve living conditions and connectivity in urban regions, ultimately enhancing quality of life for residents.
