Foreign Airlines Closely Monitoring India-Pakistan Tensions and Airspace Restrictions

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, many international airlines are steering clear of Pakistani airspace. This decision aligns with airspace restrictions following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed at least 26 lives. In response, India closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines from April 30, while Pakistan reciprocated by barring Indian carriers.

Airlines Adjust Routes for Safety

Lufthansa Group, a major German airline, announced it is closely monitoring the situation. The airline stated that due to current conditions, its flights will avoid Pakistani airspace until further notice. This change will lead to longer flight durations on some routes to Asia, including India. Lufthansa expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and advised passengers to check their flight status online before departure.

Virgin Atlantic, a British airline, also decided to bypass Pakistani airspace following the escalation in the region. The airline has rerouted some of its London to Delhi flights as a precautionary measure. Virgin Atlantic operates 35 weekly flights connecting various Indian cities and will continue to evaluate the situation for any necessary operational changes.

Operational Changes and Passenger Advisory

British Airways emphasised that safety and security remain their top priorities. The airline continuously reviews and adjusts its operations accordingly. British Airways operates 56 weekly flights to India and is committed to ensuring passenger safety amid these developments.

The recent tensions have led to military actions as well. In retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor. Early Wednesday, they conducted missile strikes targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.

Lufthansa operates 64 weekly flights to five Indian cities. The airline advises passengers to stay informed about their flight status through its app or website due to potential delays from rerouted flights.

The situation remains fluid as airlines adapt their operations in response to geopolitical tensions in the region. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated on travel advisories and flight schedules during this period of uncertainty.
