The Government of India has extended lifetime free railway travel to decorated armed forces personnel and their dependent family members. According to an ANI report, eligible beneficiaries can travel free of cost in Indian Railways' First Class, 2AC and AC Chair Car categories.
"The Government of India has issued an order to grant railway concession in the form of complimentary lifelong free travel in First Class/ 2 AC / AC Chair Car, along with one companion in trains of Indian Railways to the awardees of Sana/Nau Sena/Vayu Sena Medal gallantry awards/their spouse (widows/widower till their remarriage)/parents of unmarried posthumous awardees," quoted ANI citing defence officials.

Indian Railways' Travel Concession For Decorated Armed Forces Personnel
The Indian Railways has offered concession for decorated armed forces personnel. As per the ANI report, awardees of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry will now receive complimentary lifelong travel.
The free train travel concession will also be extended to other family members, subject to the clearance of rules on eligibility and travel class.
The facility also includes spouses, including widows or widowers until remarriage, and parents of unmarried posthumous awardees. Each pass holder can be accompanied by one person on such complimentary journeys.
Ex-Servicemen Employment
Apart from announcing benefits to gallantry awardees, the Indian Railways has also introduced a framework for cooperation. Under the framework, ex-servicemen and ex-Agniveers would be eligible for reservation in level-2 and level-1 job vacancies in the Indian Railways.
Ex-Servicemen Employment Reservation in Indian Railways
To provide employment avenues for ex-servicemen and ex-Agniveers, a 10% horizontal reservation in Level-2/above posts and 20% in Level-1 posts has been provisioned for ex-servicemen. Additionally, 5% reservation in Level-2/above posts and 10% in Level-1 posts has been earmarked for ex-Agniveers.
Vacancy notifications in 2024 and 2025 together reserved 14,788 posts for ex-servicemen. This included 6,485 Level-1 posts and 8,303 Level-2 or higher posts. Recruitment to Level-1, earlier called Group D, is handled by Railway Recruitment Centres, while Level-2 and above posts are filled through Railway Recruitment Boards, using competitive examinations.
The introduction of the Armed Forces quote on the Ministry of Railways jobs may help in clearing up the pending hiring on urgent vacant positions. As per the ANI report, the Ministry of Railways is hiring ex-servicemen as 'Pointsmen' on a contract basis across zones. These contracts will continue till the completion of standard recruitment cycles.
