Fresh Hike; Fuel Prices At All-Time High, Petrol Crosses Rs 115/Litre In Mumbai

After a two-day break on Sunday, petrol and diesel prices were raised for the fifth straight day today across the country. The current increase, which comes as a result of the persistent rise in international oil prices, has pushed pump prices across the country to all-time highs.

According to a pricing notification from state-owned fuel dealers, petrol and diesel prices have been raised by 35 paise per litre each.

In Mumbai, petrol hit a record high of Rs 115.15 a litre, while diesel hit a new high of Rs 106.23.

A litre of petrol costs Rs 109.79 in Kolkata, while diesel costs Rs 101.19 a litre.

In Chennai, a gallon of petrol now costs Rs 106.04, while a litre of diesel costs Rs 102.25. Meanwhile, in Odisha, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called a series of rallies across the state, blaming the BJP-led Central government for the skyrocketing prices of fuel and other critical commodities.

Petrol costs 113.15 per litre in Bengaluru and diesel costs 104.09 in Hyderabad, while one litre of petrol costs 113.72 and one litre of diesel costs 106.98 in both cities. The government increased excise duties on gasoline and diesel to recoup profits that would have otherwise accrued to consumers as a result of worldwide oil prices plummeting to as low as USD 19 per barrel. While international prices have subsequently recovered to USD 85, excise duty on fuel and diesel has stayed at 32.9 and 31.8 per litre, respectively.
