FSSAI Stresses on Safe Food for Students, Asks States to Provide Trainings

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has emphasized the importance of ensuring safe food for students and has asked state authorities to provide training to those handling food items in canteens of hostels and universities.

FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao addressed the 42nd Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday. He urged states and Union Territories to create awareness about food safety.

Training for Food Handlers

During the meeting, Rao directed the Commissioners of Food Safety of States and UTs to organize training for food handlers in the canteens of student hostels and universities to ensure safe and hygienic food for students.

Upgradation of Food Testing Infrastructure

The CEO called upon the Commissioner of Food Safety to upgrade the present food testing infrastructure and increase the number of food testing laboratories in the country.

Surveillance on Milk and Milk Products

Rao encouraged the states and UTs to make efforts to carry out surveillance on milk and milk products and sweets, as the festive season is approaching.

Promoting Modernization of Food Streets

He also spoke about the importance of promoting the modernization of 100 food streets initiative.

Participation in the Meeting

More than 50 officials, including Commissioners of Food Safety (CFS), representatives from states and UTs, senior officials from FSSAI and nodal ministries, and members representing the food industry, consumers, agriculture, laboratories, and research bodies participated in the meeting.

The FSSAI's emphasis on safe food for students and its call for training food handlers, upgrading food testing infrastructure, and conducting surveillance on milk and milk products during the festive season are important steps towards ensuring the health and well-being of students and the general public.
