Since India is almost 85% reliant on imports to meet its oil needs, local fuel costs are determined by global oil prices. Following the statement by the US Federal Reserve that it will begin reducing asset purchases in the coming months, international oil prices fell to their lowest level since May, causing commodities to fall and the currency to rise.

In Kolkata, too, the price of a litre of petrol and diesel remained steady, at Rs 101.62 and Rs 91.71, respectively.

A litre of petrol was also sold in Chennai for the same price - Rs 98.96. In Tamil Nadu's capital, the price of diesel remained steady at Rs 93.26 per litre.

The GST Council has opted to keep petrol and diesel out of the scope of the GST since combining the current excise charge and VAT into a single national rate will have a negative impact on income.

Mumbai Rs 107.26
