Ganesh Visarjan 2026: When Will Ganeshotsav End?
The traditional 10-day Ganeshotsav celebrations will conclude on Friday, September 25, 2026, with Anant Chaturdashi marking the main day of Ganesh Visarjan. This is the day when many large public Ganesh mandals and devotees take part in grand processions before immersing idols in accordance with religious traditions.
However, not every household observes the festival for the full 10 days. Depending on regional customs and family traditions, devotees may perform Visarjan after one and a half days, three days, five days or seven days.
Why Is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
Ganesh Chaturthi commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha, one of Hinduism's most widely worshipped deities. Ganesha is revered as a symbol of wisdom, prosperity and new beginnings and is popularly worshipped as Vighnaharta, or the remover of obstacles.
For this reason, devotees often invoke Lord Ganesha before beginning an important undertaking. This may include starting a business, moving into a new home, beginning an educational journey or embarking on a significant new chapter in life.
The celebrations typically begin with the installation of an idol, followed by prayers, aarti and offerings. Fruits, flowers and traditional sweets are presented to the deity, with modak holding a particularly special place in Ganesh Chaturthi traditions.
Public celebrations often extend beyond religious rituals. Across cities and towns, community pandals may organise cultural events, devotional programs, music performances and social initiatives during the festival.
