In March 2026, the government banned consumers with PNG connections from obtaining LPG connections or purchasing LPG cylinders. Further, the government announced the removal of LPG connections from those households whose societies have PNG infrastructure. The move is to reduce dependency on LPG and strengthen the rollout of PNG connections in India, which are much safer and cheaper compared to LPG.
Earlier, in March, the government stated that LPG connections would be removed within three months if PNG connections were not chosen. This is for societies with PNG infrastructure. The deadline is likely to end in June 2026.
Gas Cylinder Booking Rules Of 45-Days & 25-Days:
After the US-Israel-Iran war escalated in the early days of March, the government had to implement several measures to cushion the LPG supply shortage. One of them was the introduction of a lock-in period for refilling LPG cylinders.
Accordingly, the government removed the 21-day lock-in period for LPG purchases and instead increased the number of days. Now, the lock-in period for LPG is 25-days for customers in urban areas and a 45-day lock-in for customers in rural areas.
LPG Biometric Aadhaar Authentication For LPG Connection:
Furthermore, the government made it mandatory for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries to do an Aadhaar-based authentication. As per the latest direction, the ministry clarified that the requirement of eKYC applies to those LPG consumers who have not done eKYC so far. If you are a non-PMUY customer and have done it before, then you are not required to do the LPG biometric Aadhaar authentication.
Further, the ministry said, PMUY customers need to do it only once every financial year, that too only for receiving targeted DBT subsidies after 7 refills i.e. on the 8th and 8th refill.
OTP-Based LPG Cylinder Delivery:
Last month, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized on the transparency of LPG cylinders delivery. The ministry pointed out that LPG delivery will not be possible if consumers do not share the OTP, a move to secure that the gas cylinders do not fall into the wrong hands.
Also, OMCs have emphasized on OTP-based delivery as priority to avoid mishandling of LPG cylinders and ensure transparency.
