Gas Cylinder Rules From May 1: Will 14.2 kg, 19 kg Indane, Bharat Gas, HP Gas LPG Prices Rise For May 2026?
The month of May is just around the corner and anticipation has started to build of key changes in the prices of LPG cylinders, which have seen a significant hike since the US-Israel-Iran war began. The most increase has been in 19Kg LPG cylinders, while the 14.2 kg domestic commercial cylinder has witnessed modest upside. The conditions at Middle East and Strait of Hormuz remain vulnerable, keeping the energy crisis at a heightened level. Amidst this, it will be keenly watched whether the Indian oil marketing companies finally decide to ease LPG prices or impose yet another hike.
LPG Gas Cylinder Prices From May 1:

It needs to be noted that Indian OMCs like HPCL, Indian Oil and HPCL decides the prices of LPG cylinders for domestic commercial use. They also decide the prices of industrial gas cylinders as well. The most popular LPG cylinder of Indian Oil is Indane Gas, while BPCL sells LPG as Bharat Gas and last but not the least HP Gas is sold by HPCL.
Every start of the month, these OMCs revise the prices of LPG.
With the current economic uncertainties and fragile geopolitical conditions, OMCs are absorbing massive losses due to West Asia war. Some of the impact is passed on to consumers with hikes in LPG cylinders.
For instance, from March 1st to April month, OMCs have hiked the price of 19Kg LPG Cylinders three times. The first hike was in the range of Rs 28 to Rs 31 on March 1, 2026, but as the US-Israel-Iran escalated into shutdown of Strait of Hormuz, OMCs were pushed to announce yet another hike of Rs 114.5 per cylinder on March 7, 2026. Later on, for April 2026, OMCs hiked 19kg LPG cylinder prices by Rs 196 to Rs 218 across major metro cities.
The condition of 14.2Kg LPG cylinders faced hikes but not as extreme as 19Kg cylinders. Since US-Israel-Iran war, OMCs have hiked 14.2Kg LPG cylinder prices only once and that to by Rs 60 per cylinder.
It is expected that another hike could be announced in 19Kg LPG cylinder prices for May 2026.
As per the latest note by Sanjeev Prasad, MD & Co-Head at Kotak Institutional Equities, the supply disruptions to crude oil, natural gas and LPG since the start of the West Asia war have acutely highlighted India's external energy dependence. The potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz (SOH) may address supply shortages over the next few months. Nonetheless, India may have to (1) reduce its dependency on imported energy and (2) diversify its supply base, given the continued risk of periodic closure of the SOH and SOH's relevance for India's oil and gas supplies.
Gas Cylinder Booking Rules Changes From May 1:
Apart from this, other key changes are also expected in May month, especially regards to booking gas cylinders.
As per reports, companies could change the lock-in period for booking LPG cylinders from the current 25-day gap between bookings. Also, an OTP-based delivery system is expected to be permanent.
Further the latest update by the government stated that despite the ongoing geopolitical situation, the Government has ensured that 100% supply is being made to Domestic LPG, Domestic PNG and CNG (Transport).
In a statement, HPCL highlighted that between 1st and 27th April 2026, they delivered over 335 lakh LPG cylinders nationwide, reaffirming its ability to sustain uninterrupted supply at scale, across geographies and consumer segments.
Additionally, HPCL said, during this period, the Company supplied over 7.17 lakh Free Trade LPG cylinders (5 Kg) and over 26,000 cylinders (2 Kg), expanding access to flexible, affordable energy solutions for migrant workers, small businesses, and households with varying consumption needs.
