Ashok Gehlot Appeals to PM Modi for Urgent Approvals on Barmer Refinery Project

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the Prime Minister's Office grants all necessary approvals for the Barmer refinery. Modi is set to inaugurate the Rising Rajasthan investment summit in Jaipur soon. Gehlot highlighted the importance of these approvals in a post on X, emphasising their significance for Rajasthan's development.

Gehlot Appeals to PM Modi on Barmer Refinery

Gehlot expressed concerns about the progress of the Barmer refinery project. He mentioned that during a review meeting on June 2, 2023, officials had promised that commercial production would begin by December 31, 2024. However, he now doubts this timeline will be met. The former chief minister also pointed out that a Petroleum Chemicals and Petro Investment Region (PC-PIR) was planned between Barmer and Jodhpur to utilise refinery byproducts.

Barmer Refinery Approvals and Delays

The PC-PIR was intended to foster various industries, but progress has stalled since the new BJP government took office. Gehlot criticised the central government for delaying necessary permissions for this project. He warned that without these approvals, byproducts from the refinery would be processed in other states once it becomes operational.

Gehlot claimed that the PC-PIR could have generated 1.5 lakh jobs, but this potential is diminishing due to delays. He reminded the public of past issues during a previous BJP administration when work on the refinery was delayed for five years. This delay nearly doubled construction costs from Rs 40,000 crore, placing an unnecessary financial burden on the state government.

Impact on Employment and Industry

The former chief minister expressed concern that continued delays in PC-PIR work would lead industries to relocate to other states, resulting in lost employment opportunities for young people in Rajasthan. Gehlot's appeal underscores the urgency of resolving these issues to prevent further economic setbacks for the state.

Gehlot's statements highlight ongoing challenges in securing necessary approvals and advancing key projects in Rajasthan. His call to action aims to address these obstacles and ensure timely completion of projects like the Barmer refinery and associated industrial developments.
