Germany rail disruption as GSM-R communications outage halts Deutsche Bahn trains
A nationwide fault in the GSM-R digital communications system forced Deutsche Bahn to halt train services across Germany late Tuesday, stranding passengers and creating long queues at stations. The operator said it restored the system after about two and a half hours and restarted services gradually, while issuing taxi and hotel vouchers and apologising for disruption.
A fault in a communications network stopped Germany’s rail traffic late Tuesday. Passengers across the country were left waiting at stations. Many lined up at help desks for updates and alternatives. The disruption affected the national network run by Deutsche Bahn and left some travellers unsure how to reach planned destinations.

Deutsche Bahn said the outage involved the GSM-R digital system used for internal railway communication. The operator said shortly before 1 am that the problem was fixed. Service was then returning gradually. The disruption lasted almost two-and-a-half hours from the first report.

The company later said the cause had been found, but gave no details. The Bild newspaper quoted Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla as saying that they were able to stabilise the situation with an emergency system. During the disruption, the operator issued taxi and hotel vouchers. Some stations also kept trains available for passengers to sit.
Deutsche Bahn apologised while trains remained stopped. Trains were held at platforms rather than moving between cities. Would-be passengers stood in long queues at information counters. Many tried to make new travel plans while waiting for clearer guidance from staff.
Deutsche Bahn GSM-R outage impact on passengers
At Berlin’s central station, Reyna Ghoshal and a friend tried to return to Munich. Ghoshal said the mood looked tense on arrival. "The train conductor was very nice, but he was just like, we dont know,\" said Ghoshal, who is from Atlanta. \"She said that we booked a bus for 8 am just in case, but generally we dont know whats going on.\"
Deutsche Bahn GSM-R outage amid wider rail disruption
In recent years, complaints about delays and disruption in Germany have risen. Government-owned Deutsche Bahn has begun major route rebuilds after years of underinvestment. These works are detailed and can disrupt services. The aim is to improve punctuality and overall performance across key corridors.
Germany’s rail system has rarely shut down all or most trains before. Past nationwide stops were linked to storms rather than technical issues. This time, the trigger was a digital communications fault. The incident added to public concern about reliability during already difficult network upgrades.
Deutsche Bahn GSM-R outage and what the system does
GSM-R stands for Global System for Mobile Communications–Railway. It supports voice and data services needed to run railways. This includes contact between train drivers and control centres. The European Union Agency for Railways says GSM-R has rolled out across Europe since 2000 as a shared operations standard.
Deutsche Bahn said the communications issue was resolved and trains were running again in stages. The company did not publish the exact technical cause. Passengers were offered vouchers and shelter where possible during the wait. The disruption showed how crucial GSM-R is to keeping rail traffic moving safely.
