Germany rail disruption as Deutsche Bahn halts trains after GSM-R communications outage
Germany rail disruption left passengers stranded after Deutsche Bahn halted all trains nationwide due to a fault in the GSM-R digital communications system. The operator said it identified the cause and deployed technicians to restore service, offering taxi and hotel vouchers. Some services later resumed, though delays and cancellations continued, including around Berlin.
A nationwide fault in Germany’s rail communications system stopped Deutsche Bahn trains late Tuesday. Services were held at stations, leaving passengers waiting across the country. Many travellers queued at station information desks for updates. Deutsche Bahn linked the disruption to the GSM-R digital network used for internal railway communication.

The operator said the issue affected the whole network and forced a safety halt. In a statement released at midnight, Deutsche Bahn said the cause had been found. The company did not describe what the cause was. Deutsche Bahn added that technicians are working intensively on a solution.
Germany railway system hit by GSM-R communication failure
Deutsche Bahn explained that GSM-R supports both voice and data needed for rail operations. The system connects train drivers with control centres during journeys. GSM-R stands for Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway. The European Union Agency for Railways says the standard has been used across Europe since 2000.
To help stranded passengers, Deutsche Bahn said it would provide taxi and hotel vouchers. The company also said it would try to open trains at stations. This was meant to give travellers a place to sit. Deutsche Bahn apologised for the disruption caused by the stoppage.
Germany railway system services restart with delays after GSM-R outage
Roughly two hours after the outage was reported, trains were moving again on parts of the network. The Berlin commuter network said trains were running again. However, the operator warned passengers about ongoing disruption. Delays and cancellations were still expected after services resumed.
DB Regio Mitte, which runs regional services in western and southwestern Germany, also reported a restart. The company said delays and cancellations should still be expected. It added that disruption could last until at least 6 am on Wednesday. Information boards and announcements continued to warn passengers about changes.
Germany railway system faces wider pressure amid delays and route works
Germany has seen more complaints in recent years about late trains and disrupted journeys. Government-owned Deutsche Bahn has begun major repairs on key routes. The work has been described as thorough but disruptive. Deutsche Bahn has said the aim is to improve performance after years of underinvestment.
Germany’s rail network has rarely seen near-total stoppages in the past. When they happened before, storms were the main cause. This time, the trigger was technical and linked to the GSM-R system. Even after trains restarted in some areas, operators continued to warn of delays and cancellations.
