General Motors Fined $146M for Exceeding CO2 Emissions in Older Models

General Motors (GM) is set to pay nearly $146 million in penalties to the federal government. This is due to 5.9 million of its older vehicles not meeting emissions and fuel economy standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Wednesday that certain GM vehicles from the 2012 to 2018 model years failed to comply with federal fuel economy requirements.

GM Fined $146M for CO2 Excess

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that its testing showed GM pickup trucks and SUVs emit 10% more carbon dioxide on average than GM's initial compliance testing indicated. Despite this, the vehicles will remain on the road and cannot be repaired, according to the EPA.

GM's Response and Compliance

GM stated that it adhered to all regulations regarding pollution and mileage certification of its vehicles. The company also mentioned that it is not admitting to any wrongdoing or non-compliance with the Clean Air Act.

The enforcement action affects approximately 4.6 million full-size pickups and SUVs and about 1.3 million midsize SUVs, as per the EPA. The models involved include the Chevy Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevy Silverado.

Impact on GM's Credits

As a result of this penalty, GM will have to forfeit "credits" used to ensure that manufacturers' greenhouse gas emissions are below the fleet standard for emissions applicable for that model year.

An EPA spokesperson clarified that the violations were unintentional. This statement suggests that GM did not deliberately fail to meet the emissions standards.

The fine underscores the importance of adhering to federal emissions and fuel economy standards. It also highlights the role of regulatory bodies like the NHTSA and EPA in enforcing these standards.

This development serves as a reminder for automakers about the stringent regulations they must follow. It also emphasizes the potential financial repercussions of failing to comply with these regulations.
