Gold rates and silver rates in India traded on a mixed note in the early deals of May 14. MCX gold price surged by at least 0.5% to trade near Rs 1.63 lakh per 10 grams. On the other hand, MCX silver dropped by nearly 1% to trade around Rs 2,98,500 per 1Kg. This comes after MCX gold and silver recorded one of the strongest single-day surges of 2026 yesterday due to the import duty hike from 6% to 15%. However, the international market continues to be under pressure as rising US inflation heightens expectations of rate hikes from US Federal Reserve.
In the early trade, spot gold traded in the red to near $4,680 per ounce and spot silver dropped by 1% to trade near $86.8 per ounce. On the other hand, crude oil prices surged by over 1% each in US WTI and Brent Crude, which are trading above the 101 and 106 marks.
On Wednesday, the US wholesale inflation climbed in April at its fastest pace since 2022, driven by higher trade and energy costs that is linked to the current war with Iran in Middle East. This comes after US consumer inflation soared to 3.8% last month, which is highest reading since May 2023.
Investors have now fully ruled out a Fed rate cut this year, while increasingly expect a greater likelihood of another rate hike before year-end. Although gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, higher interest rates tend to pressure the non-yielding asset. Meanwhile, markets are also closely watching President Trump's visit to China for signs of progress on the fragile trade truce and developments surrounding the Iran conflict, as per Trading Economics.
