Gold rates and silver rates in India dropped sharply on June 17, 2026, after US Federal Reserve signaled rate hikes later in 2026, while keeping policy rates steady at 3.50% to 3.75% for June 2026. MCX Gold has crashed by nearly Rs 1,800 to struggle around Rs 1,52,100 and MCX silver nosedived by Rs 6,000 to hold around Rs 2,45,500 levels.
MCX gold and silver prices crashed despite strong buying in international bullion market. Spot gold and spot silver are currently higher by 1.2% and 1.4% to trade around $4,310 per ounce and $69 per ounce. This is because spot gold and spot silver fell from their pivotal marks of $4,350 and $70 yesterday before recovering losses.
On the other hand, crude oil prices continued to under pressure. US WTI Crude Oil futures declined by nearly 3% to trade around $75 per barrel and Brent Crude slipped by 2% to trade around $78 per barrel.
Both precious metals in India could not gain due to US dollar which is holding above $100 mark after Fed signaled rate hikes in the upcoming policy.
Majority of FOMC members are predicting at least 1 rate hike in next half of 2026. Also, US Fed sharply hiked its inflation forecast amidst economical strains owing to Middle East conflict. Also, US Fed chair Kevin Warsh did not offer any guidelines for next policy move.
FOMC decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent, in support of the Federal Reserve's dual mandate. The Committee reaffirmed its policy of maintaining ample reserves in the banking system.
Lastly, FOMC pointed out that inflation remains elevated relative to the committee's target of 2%, "in part reflecting supply shocks that have driven price increases in certain sectors, including energy."
