Explaining the uptrend in gold, Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research, Kotak Securities said, spot gold reclaimed the $4,400 level, with silver recovering above $66.50, snapping a three-session losing streak as persistent dollar weakness provided the primary catalyst for the reversal. The dollar index retreated to near two-month lows around 98.6, weighed by yen appreciation following hawkish commentary from several Bank of Japan officials, shifting monetary policy outlook and caution ahead of US inflation numbers.
He further added that the recovery follows a period of sustained selling pressure that pulled gold down over 1% to near $4,345 and silver 0.5% lower to $65.50, as elevated Treasury yields, firmer Fed rate-hike expectations and rising crude prices collectively outweighed dollar softness. Markets are currently pricing approximately 60% probability of a 25-basis point rate increase at the September 16 FOMC meeting. This week's inflation releases will be the primary determinant of whether that probability firms recede.
Furthermore, the analyst said, August PPI is due Thursday, followed by CPI on Friday. A softer print would materially reduce hike probability and open the path toward the $4,500 resistance zone. A reading above expectations, particularly in the context of elevated energy prices, would likely reinstate selling pressure and bring the $4,300 support zone into focus. Weekly jobless claims will provide additional labour market context ahead of the policy decision.
