Google is taking steps to combat deepfakes by requiring YouTube creators to disclose any altered or synthetic content they post. This move comes in response to growing concerns about the spread of misinformation and disinformation using AI-generated content.
In a bid to combat the spread of deepfakes, Google announced on Wednesday that content creators on YouTube will be required to disclose any altered or synthetic content they post on the platform. This move comes in response to growing concerns about the misuse of AI-generated content to create realistic and deceptive videos.
Removal of AI-Generated Content
Google stated that it will enable the removal of AI-generated or other synthetic or altered content on YouTube that simulates an identifiable individual, including their face or voice, through its privacy request process. This will provide users with a mechanism to request the removal of deepfakes and other manipulated content that impersonates them.
Disclosure Requirements for Altered Content
In the coming months, YouTube will require creators to disclose altered or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools. Creators will be required to provide clear and prominent labels in the description panel and video player to inform viewers about the manipulated nature of the content. Google emphasized its commitment to working with creators before the rollout to ensure they understand the new requirements.
Government Initiative against Deepfakes
The development comes within a week of the Union cabinet ministers for electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, directing social media platforms to take strict action against deepfakes. Vaishnaw announced that the government will introduce new guidelines to combat deepfakes, while Chandrasekhar urged social media firms to update their user policies in accordance with the IT rules notified in October 2022.
Collaboration for Responsible AI
Google acknowledged that there is no simple solution to combat deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. The company emphasized the need for a collaborative effort involving open communication, rigorous risk assessment, and proactive mitigation strategies. Google highlighted its collaboration with the Indian government for a multi-stakeholder discussion to address the challenge collectively and ensure a responsible approach to AI.
Investment in Responsible AI Center
As part of its commitment to responsible AI, Google announced an investment of USD 1 million in grants to the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. This investment will establish the first-of-its-kind multidisciplinary center for Responsible AI in India. The center will foster collective efforts, bringing together researchers, domain experts, developers, community members, and policymakers, to advance the responsible development and adoption of AI in the Indian context.
Addressing Concerns around Deepfakes
The Indian government's focus on deepfakes gained momentum after several celebrities reported the circulation of their manipulated images and videos. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns about the issue. Google acknowledged the feedback received from creators, viewers, and artists regarding the potential impact of emerging technologies on individuals and society.
Google's move to tighten norms around deepfakes on YouTube is a significant step in the fight against the spread of manipulated content. By requiring content creators to disclose altered or synthetic content, Google aims to empower users with information and provide a mechanism for the removal of deepfakes. The collaboration with the Indian government and the establishment of the Responsible AI center demonstrate Google's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by deepfakes and promoting the responsible use of AI.
