Google to Manufacture Pixel 8 Phones in Tamil Nadu, Boosts AI Skills

Google plans to collaborate with the Tamil Nadu government on manufacturing Pixel 8 phones, skill development, and creating an industrial ecosystem for MSMEs to develop scalable AI solutions. The announcement came after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Google and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin at Google's Mountain View office in California.

The MoU involves Google working with Guidance, a state-backed nodal agency, to promote investments for developing a robust AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. This includes providing access to advanced technologies and resources to empower individuals, businesses, and government entities to leverage AI for inclusive growth and progress.

Focus on Manufacturing and Skill Development

Google will explore collaborations on manufacturing Pixel 8 phones in Tamil Nadu through local partnerships. The "Made in India" Pixel 8 devices are already being manufactured in the state. Additionally, Google aims to upskill Tamil Nadu's workforce with AI capabilities and explore AI learning initiatives under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme.

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We are happy to collaborate with Google on advanced manufacturing, including the recently announced Made in India Pixel 8 phone being manufactured in Tamil Nadu." He added that the MoU would explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI labs.

Google will work with the startup ecosystem in Tamil Nadu to offer mentorship and networking opportunities with Google experts and industry leaders.
