While some apps have been restored to the Play Store after complying with Googles billing policies, a large number of delisted apps remain unavailable, leading to apprehensions among Indian app developers.
In a recent development, several apps have made their way back onto the Google Play Store after complying with Google's billing policy. However, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has voiced concerns as the majority of the delisted apps remain inaccessible.

Matrimony.com's Partial Restoration
Murugavel J, the founder and CEO of matrimony.com, reported that only eight of the company's apps, including Bengali Matrimony, Marathi Matrimony, Tamil Matrimony, Jodii, and Bharat Matrimony, were reinstated on Sunday. However, this reinstatement came at the cost of accepting Google's terms. Despite this partial success, a vast majority of the company's 100-plus apps still await restoration on the Play Store.
Government's Stance and Ongoing Tensions
Despite the government's clear stance against the delisting of apps based on billing policies, Google has yet to take comprehensive action to reinstate all the affected apps. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw firmly stated that Google's removal of apps was unacceptable and that startups would receive the necessary protection. The tension between Google and Indian apps escalated on Friday when the tech giant removed certain apps from the Play Store over a dispute regarding service fee payments.
IAMAI's Concerns and Call for Fairness
IAMAI expressed its deep concern over the continued delisting of Indian apps, considering such measures unfair and disproportionate, especially amidst ongoing legal proceedings. The association highlighted the discriminatory nature of Google's actions, contrasting them with preferential terms offered to app developers in other jurisdictions. IAMAI urged Google to restore the status quo of the affected apps and re-list them on the Play Store as they have operated since their inception.
Government Intervention and Industry Support
In an effort to resolve the issue, the government is scheduled to meet with Google and representatives of the concerned apps on Monday. IAMAI emphasized the need to protect the Indian tech ecosystem and provide favorable terms that align with the dynamics of the Indian market. The association also commended the government's proactive response and commitment to resolving the matter.
While some progress has been made with the reinstatement of a few apps, the majority of delisted apps remain inaccessible on the Google Play Store. IAMAI's concerns highlight the need for fairness and a mutually beneficial solution. The upcoming meeting between the government, Google, and app representatives holds significance in addressing this issue and ensuring a conducive environment for the growth and development of India's tech ecosystem.
