Google has announced the establishment of a new Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC) in India, which will focus on enhancing security and online safety products. This centre, set to open in 2025, will be the fourth globally after similar centres in Dublin, Munich, and Malaga. The initiative was revealed during the 10th edition of the Google for India event.

The Indian GSEC will bring together top safety engineers, local policy experts, government partners, and academia to address India's unique challenges. "We'll focus on protecting users from threats like scams and fraud, bolstering enterprise and government security," stated Snigdha Bhardwaj, Director of Search and Generative AI Trust Strategy at Google.
Focus on Security Products
The centre aims to develop security products specifically for Indian users, tackling issues such as financial fraud that have increased with digital payments. Roma Datta Chobey, Google India MD, expressed excitement about hosting this centre in India to address online safety for users, businesses, and the public sector.
Bhardwaj emphasised that for the internet to empower nearly a billion Indians effectively, it must be a safe and trustworthy space. She highlighted that India's success in the digital age depends on adopting new technologies while maintaining trust within the ecosystem.
AI-Powered Fraud Prevention
Google is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance protective measures by automatically detecting and blocking fraudulent activities. Bhardwaj noted that proactive mitigation on Google Pay has been a priority, powered by advanced AI and machine learning models.
Since last year, Google has prevented scams worth over Rs 13,000 crores and issued 41 million warnings for fraudulent activities to protect Indian users. Additionally, over 170 million policy-violating reviews were removed from Google Maps globally in 2023.
Bhardwaj remarked that these figures signify more than just data; they represent lives protected, businesses safeguarded, and trust preserved. The multi-year plans involve collaboration with academia and experts on research and development aspects.
The establishment of GSEC in India marks a significant step towards addressing online safety challenges unique to the country. By focusing on user protection and trust-building measures, Google aims to create a safer digital environment for Indian users.
