Government Blacklists Eight Entities Over Fraudulent SMS Scams

In a significant move to combat SMS-based scams, the Indian government has taken stringent measures by blacklisting eight major entities responsible for sending over 10,000 fraudulent messages in the last three months. This action was announced in an official statement detailing the collaborative efforts between the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) under the Sanchar Saathi initiative. The crackdown aims to shield citizens from the growing menace of SMS frauds that have been on the rise.

Crackdown on SMS Scammers

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the MHA played a crucial role by identifying the misuse of eight SMS headers used in these deceptive practices. As a result, all eight principal entities, along with their 73 SMS headers and 1,522 content templates, have been barred from use by any telecom operator. This decisive step prevents these entities from sending any further messages that could potentially harm citizens.

Principal entities, as defined in telecom terminology, are businesses or legal entities that dispatch commercial messages to telecom subscribers via SMS. A header is an alphanumeric string that identifies these principal entities for sending out commercial communications. The DoT's action to blacklist these entities underscores its dedication to protecting citizens from cybercrime and ensuring the secure use of telecom resources.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious or fraudulent communication to the Chakshu facility on Sanchar Saathi. This platform aids the DoT in its efforts to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrime and financial frauds. The government's initiative also includes a stern warning against the use of mobile numbers for telemarketing activities, which are strictly prohibited. Violators risk having their connection disconnected upon the first complaint and may face blacklisting for up to two years.

Furthermore, the official release clarifies that telemarketing calls are identifiable by specific prefixes such as 180 and 140, while emphasizing that 10-digit numbers are not allowed for such purposes. To combat spam, individuals can dial 1909 or utilize the Do Not Disturb (DND) service. This comprehensive approach by the DoT and MHA showcases their commitment to safeguarding citizens against fraudulent activities and ensuring a safer telecommunications environment.
