Government Collaborates with States, Industry to Modernise Over 1,000 ITIs and NSTIs

The government is collaborating with state governments and industry bodies to modernise 1,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and five National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Jayant Chaudhary announced on Friday. "We are in talks with state governments and are having continuous dialogues with various industry associations and on this we will take their suggestions to upgrade 1,000 ITIs and 5 NSTIs," he stated.

Role of Maharashtra in Skilling Initiatives

Maharashtra is expected to play a significant role in this initiative, as it houses 4,100 ITIs, which account for 10% of the total ITIs in India. The minister emphasised the importance of making skilling aspirational so that children opting for skill-based employment can access necessary facilities.

Chaudhary highlighted that skilling is not solely the government's responsibility. He stressed that industries must also focus on workforce development to compete globally. "Skilling is not only the responsibility of the government, but a partnership between both the government and the private sector," he added.

Industry Collaboration for World-Class Training

The minister underscored the need for a partnership between the government and private sector to provide world-class training. "If the industries want to compete globally they need to focus on skilling the workforce ... it is our responsibility to reform these ITIs with relevant curriculum so that we can train our trainers who can provide world class skill training that aligns with the industry needs," Chaudhary said.

During his visit to NSTI Mumbai, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. These included agreements with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and Regional Directorate of Vocational Education and Training, Pune.

The minister noted that there are around 15,000 ITIs in India, with approximately 12,000 being privately operated. He mentioned that incorporating suggestions from these private sector institutions is crucial before proceeding with upgrades.

The initiative aims to enhance the quality of training provided by ITIs and NSTIs, ensuring they meet industry standards and requirements. This move is expected to significantly improve the employability of students graduating from these institutes.
