Government Asks Meta and X for Data on Hoax Bomb Threats Affecting Airlines

The government has requested data from social media platforms Meta and X regarding hoax bomb threats sent to airlines. Over 80 flights received such threats on Thursday. Authorities are working to identify those responsible for these activities. Sources indicate that multinational tech companies have been asked to assist in identifying the culprits, as this is considered a matter of public interest.

In the past 11 days, more than 250 flights operated by Indian carriers have faced bomb threats, primarily through social media. Government sources confirm that some individuals behind these threats have been traced, and appropriate actions are being taken. However, specific details about the origins of these messages remain undisclosed.

Social Media Platforms and Airline Threats

Meta and X have been instructed to share information about hoax calls and messages targeting airlines on their platforms. A source mentioned that cooperation is essential due to the public good involved. This was in response to questions about whether these companies are assisting the government in addressing the issue.

On Thursday, over 80 domestic and international flights of various Indian airlines received bomb threats, according to sources. Approximately 20 flights each from Air India, Vistara, and IndiGo were targeted, while Akasa Air received threats for 13 flights. Additionally, around five flights each from Alliance Air and SpiceJet were also threatened.

Airline Responses to Security Alerts

An IndiGo spokesperson stated that security-related alerts were received for 20 flights on Thursday. Akasa Air reported that 13 of its flights faced security alerts but were cleared for operations after thorough inspections. Airport services teams coordinated with local authorities at affected airports to ensure safe passenger deplaning and provide necessary assistance and refreshments.

A Vistara spokesperson confirmed that some of its flights received security threats on social media on Thursday. At least six flights to and from Kochi airport were threatened, including a SpiceJet flight from Dubai to Kochi, according to airport sources.

Government's Legislative Plans

Earlier this week, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced plans for legislative measures to address bomb threats against airlines. These measures may include placing individuals responsible for such threats on a no-fly list.

On Wednesday, an unidentified caller threatened Dumna airport in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. This threat was later confirmed as a hoax by a police officer.
