Govt Approves Rs 22,303 Crore Subsidy for P&K Fertilizers In Upcoming Rabi Season

In a move to support the farming community, the Indian government has approved a subsidy of ₹22,303 crore for Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers in the upcoming Rabi season for 2023-24. This decision was announced by the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur, following the Union Cabinet's approval chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The subsidy will be provided based on approved rates for Rabi 2023-24, which will be applicable from October 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. This move aims to ensure the availability of essential fertilizers to farmers at affordable prices, supporting the agricultural sector.

The decision to subsidize P&K fertilizers comes in response to the rising international prices of fertilizers and inputs, such as Urea, DAP, MOP, and Sulphur. By providing this financial support, the government aims to make 25 different grades of P&K fertilizers available to farmers at subsidized prices through fertilizer manufacturers and importers.

The Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme, which has been in effect since April 1, 2010, governs the subsidy on P&K fertilizers. This farmer-friendly approach is part of the government's commitment to ensuring that farmers have access to affordable fertilizers. It plays a crucial role in sustaining agricultural productivity and helping farmers cope with the challenges posed by fluctuating international prices.
