Govt Extends Olive Branch to Protesting Farmers: Talks on the Horizon

Talks to be Held to Find a Solution

Munda made these remarks on the sidelines of the 95th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Society. When asked about the plan for the next round of talks with the farmer groups, he stated that nothing has been finalized as of now. However, he assured that talks will be held as finding a solution is crucial.

Farmers' Demands and Previous Talks

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) are leading the "Delhi Chalo" march to press the government to accept their demands. These demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and farm loan waiver.

In the fourth round of talks with the farmer leaders on February 18, a panel of three Union ministers proposed that government agencies would purchase pulses, maize, and cotton at the MSP for five years after entering into an agreement with farmers. However, the protesting farmer unions rejected this proposal.

Government's Focus on Nutrition Security and Farm Sector

During his address at the event, Munda highlighted the need to address the challenges of climate change and soil erosion for the welfare of the farming community. He emphasized that the government is now focusing on the nutrition security of the country.

The minister also highlighted that the country's food grain production has increased significantly over the years, enabling the government to provide free wheat and rice to 80 crore people. He stated that the Modi government is strengthening the farm sector and working towards the welfare of farmers. Additionally, the government is promoting allied sectors such as animal husbandry, dairying, and fisheries.

ICAR's Contribution and Agricultural Development

Munda noted that ICAR has released 2,279 high-yielding varieties of seeds in the last 10 years, compared to 1,225 varieties released during the UPA regime. He emphasized the importance of developing the agricultural sector for the welfare of mankind.

India's Achievements in Agricultural Production

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Chaudhary expressed pride in India's achievements in agricultural production. He stated that India is currently the world's largest producer of milk and pulses, and the second largest producer of rice, wheat, vegetables, fruits, and fish.

Chaudhary highlighted that horticulture production has surpassed food grain production, and proper management can ensure food and nutrition security in the country.

The government's willingness to hold talks with protesting farmers demonstrates its commitment to addressing their concerns and finding a mutually acceptable solution. As India continues to make strides in agricultural production, it is essential to ensure that the welfare of farmers remains a top priority. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, investing in research and development, and providing support to farmers, the government can contribute to the overall progress and prosperity of the nation.
