Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in discussions with a Starlink delegation, including Vice President Chad Gibbs and Senior Director Ryan Goodnight. The meeting focused on Starlink's technological platform, existing partnerships, and future investment plans in India. Goyal shared these details in a post on X.

Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, is currently awaiting security clearance to operate in India. This meeting occurred as India and the United States are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. They aim to finalise the first phase by September-October this year.
Partnerships with Indian Telecom Giants
In March, Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio announced a partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink services in India. Similarly, Sunil Bharti Mittal's Bharti Airtel has also entered into an agreement with SpaceX. These collaborations highlight the growing interest in satellite internet services within the country.
The Indian government has already granted licences to Starlink's competitors, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications, for satellite internet services. However, these companies have not commenced operations due to pending spectrum allocation rules.
Challenges in Spectrum Allocation
Jio and Airtel have expressed concerns over the proposed satellite allocation rules for satcom spectrum. The spectrum allocation process will proceed once the telecom regulator Trai finalises its recommendations on the matter.
Starlink is seen as a major player in the satellite internet sector, operating over 6,750 satellites globally. In contrast, Eutelsat OneWeb has just over 600 satellites, while Jio's partners manage around 70 satellites.
Recent Developments and Future Prospects
In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Elon Musk in Washington to discuss space, mobility, technology, and innovation issues. This meeting underscored India's interest in advancing its technological capabilities through international collaborations.
At the Mobile World Congress in early March, Mittal advocated for partnerships between telecom operators and satcom players. Shortly after, Bharti Airtel signed an agreement with Starlink, followed by Jio's similar pact the next day.
Starlink can only commence operations after receiving a licence following security clearance and spectrum allocation from the government. The ongoing discussions and partnerships indicate a significant shift towards integrating satellite internet services into India's telecommunications landscape.
