The Indian government is set to introduce a GPS-based highway toll collection system on national highways, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and charge motorists for the exact distance traveled. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the pilot projects of GPS-based toll systems conducted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) have been successful, and a tender for implementing the new toll collection system will be released soon.

Successful Pilot Projects
The pilot projects of GPS-based toll systems on national highways have demonstrated their effectiveness in replacing toll plazas. These systems utilize automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to enable automated toll collection without requiring vehicles to stop. The road transport and highways ministry has already conducted two pilot projects of ANPR systems.
Reducing Traffic Congestion
The implementation of GPS-based toll collection systems is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on national highways. By eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas, the new system will ensure smoother traffic flow and shorter travel times for motorists.
Consultant Appointed
Earlier this month, the road transport and highways minister revealed that the government has appointed a consultant to assist in implementing the GPS-based toll collection system on national highways. This appointment demonstrates the government's commitment to expediting the introduction of the new toll collection system.
Improved Waiting Times
The introduction of FASTags during 2020-21 and 2021-22 has already resulted in a substantial reduction in average waiting times at toll plazas, from 8 minutes in 2018-19 to 47 seconds. However, there is still room for improvement, especially during peak hours in densely populated areas.
The upcoming GPS-based highway toll collection system promises to revolutionize the way tolls are collected on national highways in India. By reducing traffic congestion, charging motorists for the exact distance traveled, and further reducing waiting times, the new system will enhance the overall driving experience and contribute to smoother and more efficient transportation across the country.
