Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant rise in GST collections from online gaming, with a 412% increase over six months since the 28% tax was imposed on October 1, 2023. The revenue from online gaming reached Rs 6,909 crore, up from Rs 1,349 crore before the tax notification.

GST Council Meeting Insights
During the 54th GST Council meeting, Sitharaman discussed the revenue status from casinos, online gaming, and horse races after implementing the 28% GST. She highlighted that entry-level bets on online gaming platforms and casinos have been taxed at 28% since October 1, 2023. This change followed the August 2023 GST Council clarification that mandated a uniform tax rate for all online gaming platforms.
Impact on Casinos
The revenue from casinos also saw an increase of 30%, rising from Rs 164.6 crore to Rs 214 crore in the six months following the new tax implementation. This growth reflects the broader impact of the revised GST rates on gambling-related activities.
Offshore Gaming Platforms
Offshore gaming platforms were required to register with GST authorities and pay taxes. Non-compliance would result in these sites being blocked by the government. This measure aimed to ensure that all gaming platforms contributed to the tax revenue.
Real Estate Sector Report
The Group of Ministers (GoM) on real estate submitted its status report during the meeting. The GST Council recommended exempting research and development services supplied by government entities or research associations using government or private grants.
The Council decided to review the taxation on the online gaming sector after six months of its implementation. This review aims to assess the effectiveness and impact of the new tax rates on revenue collection and compliance within the sector.
