July GST Collections Climb 10.3% to Rs 1.82 Lakh Crore, Marking Third-Highest Record

GST collections in July rose by 10.3% to over Rs 1.82 lakh crore, driven mainly by domestic transactions in goods and services, according to official data released on Thursday. This marks the third-highest monthly collection since the indirect tax regime began on July 1, 2017.

July GST Hits Rs 1.82L Cr, Third-Highest Ever

The total refunds for July stood at Rs 16,283 crore. After adjusting for these refunds, the net GST collection was over Rs 1.66 lakh crore, reflecting a growth of 14.4%. The Gross GST revenue amounted to Rs 1,82,075 crore, which includes Central GST of Rs 32,386 crore, State GST of Rs 40,289 crore, and Integrated GST of Rs 96,447 crore. Additionally, the compensation cess collected was Rs 12,953 crore.

Revenue from Domestic Activities and Imports

Revenues from domestic activities grew by 8.9% to Rs 1.34 lakh crore in July. Meanwhile, revenue from imports saw a significant increase of 14.2%, reaching Rs 48,039 crore. These figures highlight the robust performance of both domestic and import sectors in contributing to the overall GST collections.

MS Mani, Partner at Deloitte India, noted that while gross GST revenues have increased by 10.3%, the growth in revenues from imports has outpaced that from domestic supplies. "These collections are based on supply transactions during June, which is typically a slow month before the festive season," Mani observed.

Historical Context and Future Projections

The highest-ever monthly GST collection was recorded in April 2024 at Rs 2.10 lakh crore. The previous record was set in April 2023 with Rs 1.87 lakh crore. At Rs 1.82 lakh crore, July's collection is the third-highest ever recorded.

Abhishek Jain, National Head of Indirect Tax at KPMG in India, commented on the growth rate: "A 10% plus growth in collections this year compared to last year aligns well with expectations and indicates stability and maturity in GST implementation." He also predicted that upcoming festive seasons would likely boost collections further.

Regional Economic Activity

Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner at EY India, highlighted a surge in tax collections from regions like Nagaland, Manipur, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Ladakh. This suggests increased economic activity and consumption in these developing areas of India.

Agarwal also mentioned that there might be a potential stagnation or decline in collections during August due to the monsoon season's impact on economic momentum.

So far this fiscal year (April-July), GST collections have grown by 10.2% to approximately Rs 7.39 lakh crore.

Mani pointed out a slowdown in refunds processing, leading to a net increase of 14.4% compared to a gross increase of 10.4%. "There appears to be a slowdown on the refunds side," he added.

With these insights and projections, it is evident that India's GST collections are showing signs of stability and growth as the country navigates through various economic phases.
