GSRTC cashless payments contribute nearly 30 per cent of daily revenue in Gujarat

The Gujarat government says the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) now generates nearly 30 per cent of daily revenue through cashless ticket payments. Passengers can pay via UPI, debit and credit cards, and mobile payments, including onboard bookings. Officials say the shift improves operational efficiency, transparency, and service convenience across its 8,000-bus fleet.

The Gujarat government said on Wednesday that the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation GSRTC now earns close to 30 per cent of daily revenue through cashless payments. The update signals a wider shift in how passengers pay for tickets. The state-run operator reported growing use of digital tools across routes and services in Gujarat.

GSRTC cashless revenue nears 30%

GSRTC allows passengers to pay through UPI, debit cards, credit cards, and mobile-based online payments. These options work for advance bookings and onboard ticket purchases. The government said digital methods are changing how passengers experience travel. It also said these payments are helping the corporation manage revenue more clearly.

GSRTC digital payments and UPI usage

UPI accounts for about 85 per cent of GSRTC digital transactions, the government said. Digital payments now form a major part of daily collections. The government said the change supports faster payments and simpler ticketing. It also linked the trend to improved transparency and stronger monitoring of collections across the system.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who holds the transport portfolio, shared daily passenger and revenue figures. On average, GSRTC carries around 27 lakh passengers every day. The corporation generates about Rs 12 crore in daily revenue, according to the release. Sanghavi said nearly 30 per cent of this amount now comes through cashless methods.

GSRTC daily revenue and digital collections

The release said GSRTC’s digital collections have risen sharply over the past year. Daily digital revenue increased from around Rs 1 crore last year to over Rs 2 crore now. The government said the figure is still rising. This growth reflects wider use of electronic payments by passengers across routes.

GSRTC operates a fleet of more than 8,000 buses, the release said. It added that mobile app bookings are increasing. This shift supports quicker ticketing and smoother boarding for passengers. The government said these changes also improve operational efficiency. It noted that digital payments help reduce cash handling across depots and services.

GSRTC digital governance and connectivity plans

The government linked the move to its digital governance efforts under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership. The release also said Sanghavi has stressed better bus connectivity to remote areas. It added that digital infrastructure is being strengthened to improve passenger convenience. The government said the aim is to raise daily ridership over time.

Sanghavi described the push as part of a larger policy direction. "We are moving towards a cashless economy, and this move is part of the larger aim of increasing the digital ecosystem,\" Sanghavi opined. The government said GSRTC will continue expanding digital options across its services as usage rises.

GSRTC officials said the corporation is preparing to raise the share of digital payments further. \"We plan to increase the share of digital payments to 60 per cent-70 per cent in the coming months by extending these facilities to commercial services and passenger pass systems as well,\" an GSRTC official said. The government said the plan builds on current growth in cashless collections.
