Gujarat Lifts Liquor Ban in GIFT City, Embracing Global Business Opportunities

In a significant move, the Gujarat government has lifted the ban on liquor in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), exempting it from the prohibition that has been in place across the state since its formation. This decision marks a departure from the state's long-standing policy of prohibition, which was implemented in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in Gujarat.

The decision to allow wine and dine facilities in GIFT City aims to create a global business ecosystem that caters to global investors, technical experts, and national and international companies. Permits and Regulations

Under the new system, hotels, restaurants, and clubs in the GIFT City area will be granted permits for wine and dine facilities. However, these establishments will not be permitted to sell liquor bottles to individuals. Access to these facilities will be restricted to those officially working in GIFT City and their official guests.

The state prohibition and excise department will oversee the import, storage, and sale of liquor in the city. Liquor access permits will be issued to owners and employees of companies in GIFT City, while temporary permits will be provided to visitors.

Opposition's Concerns

The decision to lift the liquor ban in GIFT City has faced opposition from the Congress party. Congress leaders have expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on families and social fabric, arguing that liquor consumption can lead to health problems and social disruption.

They also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for exhibiting double standards by legalizing liquor sale and consumption in Gujarat, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, who were staunch advocates of prohibition.

Demand for Prohibition Exemption

The move to exempt GIFT City from prohibition has also sparked demands for similar exemptions in other parts of the state. The DREAM city in Surat, which recently inaugurated a diamond bourse, has also called for an exemption from the liquor ban.

In the past, former chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela had advocated for lifting the ban on liquor in the state, arguing that it would boost tourism and generate revenue.
