Is Guru Purnima On July 28 Or July 29?

According to Drik Panchang, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on July 26, 2026. Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings.

The Purnima Tithi is expected to begin at 6:18 pm of July 28, 2026, and will end on 08:05 pm of July 29, 2026.

Guru Purnima 2026 Significance & History:

The origin of Guru Purnima is derived from India's ancient old bond of guru-Shishiya and has been celebrated for centuries. This day also becomes the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Maharishi Ved Vyasa does not need any introduction. He is known to have written four Vedas, composed many Puranas and is the author of India's one of the most significant book, Mahabharata.

Countries like Nepal and Bhutan also celebrate Guru Purnima. However, the importance of Guru Purnima varies from Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains.

In Jainism, Guru Purnima marks as the day, lord Mahavira's accepted Gautama Swami as his first discipline. In Buddhism, this day is celebrated as Gautam Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath. While Hindus celebrate the day to honour of the sage Vyasa, who for them is the greatest guru in ancient Hindu tradition. While sikhs honor all their Gurus for guiding, teaching core values and spiritual achievements.

Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja Acharya and Sri Madhvacharya are some of the noteworthy Gurus in Hinduism. Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Buddhists in the honor of Gautama Buddha to commemorate the day when Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, as per Drik Panchang.

Is There Stock Market Holiday On Guru Purnima?

As per both BSE and NSE holiday lists, the stock market will not be closed on July 29th for Guru Purnima. Also, there are no special holidays during the upcoming trading week.

Simply put, trading at BSE, NSE, and MCX will remain open at normal hours on July 27, July 28, July 29, July 30, and July 31.

Is There Bank Holiday On Guru Purnima?

As per RBI's holiday list for July 2026, there are no official holiday for banks on July 29, 2026. Hence, State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Bank of India and others will continue to operate as normal on both July 28 and July 29. There is no bank holiday for regional, rural, local, co-operative or foreign banks as well.
