HCLTech Mandates Employees to Work from Office Three Days a Week

IT services company HCL Technologies (HCLTech) has announced that it is mandating employees to come and work from the office three days a week. The company's CEO and Managing Director, C Vijayakumar, made the announcement on Friday, asserting that remote working in perpetuity is not a good idea at all.

TCS, Infosys Take Varied Stance on Return to Office

HCLTech mandates employees to work from office three days a week

HCLTech's move comes as large IT companies in India have outlined varied stances on their return-to-office policies. TCS, for instance, recently announced that it has asked its 6.14 lakh-plus employees to work from offices, ending the practice of remote working that started due to the pandemic. On the other hand, Infosys wants to remain flexible in its approach with employees, although it is seeing more and more employees coming back to the campus.

HCLTech CEO: Remote Working Not Good for Individuals or Organizations

In an interview, Vijayakumar explained that HCLTech is mandating three days of work from the office to ensure that employees remain engaged and productive. He believes that remote working in perpetuity is not beneficial for either individuals or organizations. The company is offering some flexibility in terms of which three days employees can work from the office, but the policy will eventually be expanded to all employees.

HCLTech Expects Flattish IT Budgets in 2024

Despite the mandate for three days of work from the office, HCLTech expects overall IT budgets in 2024 to be flattish amid inflationary pressure and high-interest rates. However, the company is confident that its large deal wins will provide it with strong momentum for the second half of FY24. Vijayakumar emphasized that customers are spending where they are convinced about the service proposition, and HCLTech is well-positioned to continue growing in this environment.

HCLTech Q2 Results: Net Profit Up 9.9%

On Thursday, HCLTech reported a 9.9% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 3,833 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The company attributed the growth to new deal wins and enhanced efficiency. However, HCLTech reduced its revenue growth guidance for the full year to 5-6% from the 6-8% projected earlier, due to below-expectation performance in the first half of the current fiscal.

HCLTech's decision to mandate three days of work from the office is a significant development in the ongoing debate over remote work. While some companies, like TCS, are fully embracing a return to the office, others, like Infosys, are opting for a more flexible approach. HCLTech's move reflects its belief that in-person collaboration and engagement are essential for the long-term success of both individuals and organizations.
