HDFC Bank Announces 2-Day Work From Home Policy For Corporate Teams After PM Modi Fuel-Saving Appeal
India's largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank, has implemented a work-from-home policy for up to two days a week for employees in Business and Corporate Enabling Functions for the next 30 days.
This is not just an internal HR policy; the bank has taken this decision after Prime Minister Modi, in his speech, requested citizens to conserve fuel due to the rising crude oil prices.
PM Modi said "We must prioritise work from home, online conferences, and virtual meetings again to reduce fuel consumption and dependence on imported energy."
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also backed him, stating, "The PM appealed on petrol and diesel. This is in the nation's interest. We should use public transport."

The Department of Financial Services directed institutions including State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and the Life Insurance Corporation of India to implement cost-cutting measures across operations. The order mandated that meetings, reviews and consultations should be conducted through video conferencing unless physical presence is considered essential. It also directed that foreign travel by senior executives, including chairpersons, MDs and CEOs, should be within prescribed limits.
HDFC Bank became one of the first major private banks to formally implement the PM's recommendation. However the bank said that all customer-facing roles like the branch staff, relationship manager, tellers, and loan officers will not be affected by this decision and must attend the office so that everyday banking for customers is completely unaffected.

Corporate India has broadly started responding to the government's call for conservation. RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka urged employees to reduce domestic and international travel, maximise virtual meetings and promote carpooling and EV usage as part of "responsible resource utilisation." At Shaadi.com, founder Anupam Mittal announced that Wednesdays would now be designated WFH days.
Major companies including Deloitte, EY, RPG Group, Tata Motors and Mercedes-Benz India said their existing hybrid work models would continue for now. KPMG in a statement said, "The announcement is being evaluated, and will be addressed suitably, keeping people, business and client commitments in mind."
In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a 50% reduction in vehicle convoys for ministers and dignitaries
Moreover, The Confederation of Real Estate Developers shifted its annual convention from Amsterdam to India, due to PM Modi's conservation push. Even PM Modi himself reduced his official convoy from more than 10 vehicles to just two SUVs.
