The change comes at an important stage for HDFC Bank, which has been working through the operational and financial impact of its merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC). With the merger now part of the bank's larger growth story, the new leadership will be closely watched for its approach to deposits, credit growth, margins and profitability.

Bagchi brings extensive experience in the financial services sector and has held senior leadership roles associated with the ICICI group. His background includes exposure to retail banking, financial products, distribution and risk management.
His appointment comes after a period in which HDFC Bank has undergone one of the biggest transformations in India's financial services industry. The merger with HDFC Ltd expanded the bank's balance sheet and strengthened its presence in housing finance, while also changing the composition of its loan book and funding requirements.
Under Jagdishan, the bank navigated the merger while also dealing with technology-related issues, regulatory requirements and changing conditions in the banking sector. Bagchi will now take charge of the lender as it moves into the next phase of that integration.
