Heatwave Alert: Maharashtra's Brahmpuri Sizzles At 47°C; IMD Warns Of Extreme Heat Across Multiple State

Some parts of India are currently under an intense heatwave as temperatures across several states crossed the dangerous 45°C mark. According to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, Brahmpuri in Maharashtra recorded the highest maximum temperature in the country at a scorching 47.1°C on May 23, triggering serious heatwave concerns.

The latest IMD heatwave update shows severe heat conditions prevailing across parts of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, with many cities recording temperatures far above normal.

Brahmpuri In Maharashtra is the hottest in India At 47.1°C

As per IMD weather recorded at 5:30 PM IST on May 23, Brahmpuri in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region became the hottest location in India with a blistering maximum temperature of 47.1°C.

The temperature in Brahmpuri was recorded 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal, showing the severity of the ongoing heatwave in central India.
Several other cities also reported extremely high temperatures:

  • Chandrapur (Maharashtra): 46.2°C
  • Banda (Uttar Pradesh): 46.2°C
  • Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh): 46.0°C
  • Raipur region areas around 46°C
  • Delhi: 45.1°C
  • Jharsuguda (Odisha): 45.2°C
  • Sambalpur (Odisha): 45.0°C
  • Jaisalmer (Rajasthan): 45.9°C

The IMD stated that many regions recorded temperatures between 2°C and 5°C above normal levels.

Delhi, Bihar, Odisha Among Worst-Hit Regions

The national capital Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1°C, nearly 4.7°C above normal, intensifying discomfort for residents.
In Bihar, several districts remained under severe heatwave conditions, while Odisha continued to experience extremely hot and humid weather. Cities including Sambalpur, Titlagarh, and Hirakud crossed the 45°C mark.

East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha regions also witnessed persistent heatwave conditions due to dry winds and clear skies.

IMD Issues Heatwave Warning

The India Meteorological Department has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions may continue in several north, central, and eastern Indian states over the coming days.

Health experts have advised people to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and reduce outdoor activity, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM.

The IMD also shared public safety guidelines to reduce heat-related illnesses.

Authorities have advised citizens to follow these precautions during extreme heat:

  • Drink plenty of water regularly
  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours
  • Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes
  • Keep homes cool and ventilated
  • Check on elderly people and children frequently
  • Seek immediate medical help if feeling dizzy, weak, or dehydrated
