Heavy Rains Loom Over Southern India, IMD Warns Of Downpour In Tamil Nadu, Kerala

As the winter season unfolds across India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of heavy rainfall in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The forecast spans the next 2-3 days, bringing potential disruptions to normal life and raising concerns about flooding in the affected regions.

According to the latest IMD predictions, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over south Tamil Nadu from December 15th to 19th. Additionally, heavy rains are expected in Kerala on December 16th and 17th. The IMD Chennai office further detailed that Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Sivaganga districts in Tamil Nadu could experience heavy to very heavy rain, while several other districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Madurai, may encounter heavy rainfall on December 16th.

The forecast for December 17th extends the warning to Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and more, with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain. On December 18th, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and other districts are expected to receive heavy rain, and this pattern may continue on December 19th in specific areas.

Earlier in the week, heavy rainfall drenched parts of Chennai showcasing unsettled weather patterns. Over the next 48 hours, the city is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with moderate rain in some areas, maintaining temperatures around 24-26°C.

The recent weather events follow the aftermath of Cyclone 'Michaung,' which brought heavy to very heavy rainfall to Chennai and nearby areas in early December. The impact led to flooding, property damage, and unfortunately, loss of lives in Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts.

As southern India braces for heavy rains, the northern regions are grappling with a different weather phenomenon - dense fog. The IMD predicts dense fog during morning hours in isolated places in Punjab and Haryana for the next four days.

In the national capital, Delhi, residents are experiencing the coldest temperatures of the season so far. On Friday, the minimum temperature plummeted to 4.9 degrees Celsius, even below Shimla's 6.8 degrees Celsius. The weather forecast for Saturday indicates a clear sky with shallow fog in the morning, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 25 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, the cold wave has tightened its grip on the region, with Srinagar registering a chilling temperature of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius on Friday morning. The harsh winter conditions have disrupted daily life, causing discomfort and hardship for residents. Poor visibility on the roads due to fog has further compounded the challenges. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar predicts generally cloudy weather for today, with a possibility of light snowfall over isolated higher regions in the northern and northeastern parts of Kashmir.

Overall, dry and cold weather conditions are likely to persist in Jammu and Kashmir until December 24th, adding to the winter woes in the region.
