HFCL, a leading domestic telecom gear manufacturer, made a significant announcement at the India Mobile Congress 2023 in Delhi on Saturday, October 28. The company introduced its 1728-intermittently-bonded ribbon (IBR) cable, designed to address the growing demand for high-fibre-count cables in data centres and bolster 5G network infrastructure across the nation.
Mahendra Nahata, the managing director of HFCL, described the innovation as 'revolutionary yet sustainable,' and emphasized its potential contributions to India's national fiberisation priorities, including the BharatNet and NHAI programs, as well as the rollout of 4G and 5G networks by telecom operators and technology enterprises.

The core technology behind the 1728-fibre IBR cables lies in individual intermittently bonded ribbons, each consisting of 12 optical fibres securely bonded at specific intervals along their lengths. This design offers a unique combination of space efficiency and full backward compatibility, allowing for seamless upgrades of optical infrastructures. This makes the cable a readily deployable innovation in the field of optical fibre technology.
This announcement follows HFCL's recent successes in securing contracts. In September, the company and its subsidiary, HTL Ltd, clinched a contract worth approximately Rs 82.60 crore, involving the supply of high-quality optical fibre cables to one of India's leading domestic telecom service providers. Additionally, last month, HFCL secured a significant Rs 1,015 crore order from the Madhya Pradesh Jal Nigam for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services.
The news of HFCL's innovative ribbon cable had a positive impact on the company's stock, with HFCL Ltd's shares ending 1.7% higher at ₹64.45 per share on Friday, October 27.
