In a significant move within the chemical industry, Kolkata-based Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd announced on March 20 its acquisition of a 40 per cent stake in Invati Creations, a firm specializing in lithium-ion electrode materials. The deal, valued at Rs 45.16 crore, was executed through a mix of cash and share swap arrangements. This strategic acquisition is part of Himadri Speciality's ambitious plan to establish India's first commercial plant dedicated to producing lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cathode active material. Located in Odisha, this plant represents a substantial investment estimated at Rs 1,125 crore.

Himadri Speciality's investment in Invati Creations marks a pivotal step towards achieving its goal of becoming a leading producer of high-quality lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery materials. This move also underscores the company's dedication to adopting innovative technologies within the battery material sector. Invati Creations, founded by alumni from IIM Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur, is at the forefront of novel molecule inventions. The company boasts several patented and patentable technologies, including the development of the first-ever broad-spectrum antiviral drug molecule.
Anurag Choudhary, CMD and CEO of Himadri Speciality Chemical, expressed that this acquisition is instrumental in propelling the company into the storage battery material domain. He highlighted that Invati's focus on enhancing storage efficiency, charging speed, and lifespan of lithium-ion batteries aligns perfectly with Himadri's vision. This collaboration is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of battery technology.
The demand for lithium-ion batteries is experiencing a surge, driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and the need for efficient power storage solutions. As India progresses towards its net-zero emissions target, the role of advanced battery technologies becomes increasingly crucial. Himadri Speciality Chemical's latest venture into the lithium-ion battery material sector through its partnership with Invati Creations is poised to play a key role in meeting this growing demand.
This development not only signifies Himadri Speciality Chemical's commitment to innovation and sustainability but also positions the company as a key player in India's journey towards energy independence and environmental responsibility. The establishment of the LFP cathode active material plant in Odisha, coupled with the strategic stake acquisition in Invati Creations, sets a new benchmark for the industry and highlights the potential for further advancements in battery technology.
