Geothermal energy talks in Houston back US-India technology transfer and pilot projects
US industry leaders and Indian diplomats met in Houston to advance geothermal energy cooperation, including technology transfer, joint pilot projects and investment. Organised by the Consulate General of India in Houston, USISPF and Project InnerSpace, the roundtable reviewed how advanced geothermal systems could support India’s non-fossil capacity targets, industrial use and data-centre cooling.
Senior US energy executives and Indian diplomats held a closed-door roundtable in Houston to speed up cooperation on next-generation geothermal energy. The meeting explored technology transfer, joint pilot projects, and investment options. Participants aimed to use Houston’s expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, and oilfield services to support India’s clean energy transition.

The session was organised by the Consulate General of India in Houston, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum USISPF, and Project InnerSpace. The agenda centred on advanced geothermal systems for zero-emission power. It also looked at meeting high-load cooling needs for data centres and heavy industry in India.

The discussion took place on October 14 and opened with remarks from Consul General D C Manjunath. D C Manjunath pointed to India’s goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. D C Manjunath also noted the net-zero emissions target for 2070. Geothermal energy was presented as a supporting source alongside other options.
Drew Nelson, Executive Director of Project InnerSpace, shared findings from a report on the sector. The report was titled The Future of Geothermal in India. Drew Nelson outlined how advanced geothermal systems can help electricity generation. Drew Nelson also covered industrial direct-use and specialised data centre cooling across the country.

USISPF Senior Director Siddharth Aryan moderated the roundtable. Companies and groups present included Baker Hughes, Fervo Energy, and Sage Geosystems. ADI Analytics, AlterG Resources, and the Greater Houston Partnership also joined. The group reviewed risk mitigation approaches and possible regulatory pathways.
The Consulate reaffirmed support for further engagement after the roundtable. The Consulate said it would connect US energy companies with Indian ministries and state governments. The plan also included links to research institutions. The aim was to speed up field deployment and support commercial partnerships.
