How to Check if an FSSAI License Number Is Genuine In 2-Minutes? A Step-by-Step Guide

Every packaged food product sold in India is required to carry a licence or registration number issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

If a food business operator meets the regulator's safety and hygiene standards only this number is provided to the. A valid FSSAI number is always 14 digits long and is printed on the food pack

FSSAI License Number

Cases of fake or misused FSSAI numbers have been rising, with some businesses printing invalid, expired, or even cloned licence numbers on their packaging to bypass safety audits or save on registration costs. For a consumer, buying from an unverified source means there is no accountability if the product turns out to be unsafe or adulterated. For the business itself, using a fake number can invite heavy fines, criminal action, and blacklisting under the Food Safety and Standards Act. This makes it worth the two minutes it takes to check a number before trusting a brand blindly.

How To Check FSSAI License Number Online

The only correct way to verify an FSSAI number is through the official FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System portal), which replaced the older FLRS system in 2020. Here is how the process works.

Step 1:Look for the FSSAI logo on the packaging, usually on the back or side
Step 2: Note down the 14-digit number printed next to it
Step 2: Open a browser and go to foscos.fssai.gov.in, the only portal that should be used for this check.
Step 4: On the homepage, click on "FBO Search."
Step 5: Enter the 14-digit licence number along with the captcha code shown on screen, then hit Submit.
Step 6: If the number is genuine, the portal will display the food business operator's name, premises address, type of licence either State or Central, validity dates, and the list of products registered under that licence.
Step 7: If the number is fake, incorrect, or does not exist in the database, the site will show a "No records found" message.
Step 8: There is also an FSSAI mobile app, Food Safety Connect, that allows the same lookup directly from a smartphone.
