HRTC Announces Recruitment of 600 Drivers and Fleet Expansion

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced that the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) will soon recruit 600 drivers. This decision was made during the 156th Board of Directors meeting of HRTC, where Agnihotri, who also oversees the Transport Ministry, stated that the recruitment process for 350 bus drivers would resume shortly. These 350 positions are part of the 600 total vacancies to be filled.

Agnihotri emphasised HRTC's commitment to improving transportation services in Himachal Pradesh, especially in remote areas. He mentioned that the corporation is working diligently to ensure better access to transportation facilities for all residents. To enhance its fleet, HRTC plans to purchase 250 new diesel buses and 50 tempo travellers at a cost of approximately Rs 105 crore. Additionally, 24 new super luxury buses and 50 tempo travellers will be added this year.

Fleet Expansion and Modernisation

The corporation also aims to introduce electric buses worth around Rs 25 crore into its fleet. This move aligns with HRTC's efforts to modernise its services and promote sustainable transportation options. Agnihotri highlighted that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to replace old buses and improve overall service quality.

In an effort to encourage cashless transactions, HRTC will provide incentives to conductors who promote digital payments. This initiative is expected to streamline payment processes and enhance convenience for passengers. The meeting also addressed the formation of a resource mobilisation committee tasked with identifying reasons for the corporation's financial losses and suggesting measures for improvement.

Financial Challenges and Solutions

Officials noted that HRTC's annual revenue, including government grants for free travel and operating non-economical routes, stands at Rs 1,600 crore. However, the expenditure amounts to Rs 1,840 crore, indicating a significant financial shortfall. The resource mobilisation committee will play a crucial role in addressing these financial challenges and proposing viable solutions.

The meeting also discussed pending medical reimbursement bills amounting to Rs 55.36 lakh for HRTC employees. Agnihotri assured that these bills would be settled soon. Additionally, the corporation has decided to conduct annual medical check-ups for all employees to ensure their well-being and better health management.

These comprehensive measures reflect HRTC's dedication to enhancing its services while addressing both operational and financial challenges. By focusing on fleet modernisation, digital payment promotion, and employee welfare, HRTC aims to provide better transportation services across Himachal Pradesh.
